Canada Fall Lawn Care Schedule: Region-by-Region Dates

Next summer's lawn is decided between mid-August and Thanksgiving. This table puts the four fall jobs — aerate, overseed, feed, grub-treat — on real dates for each region. The rule behind all of them: cool-season grass needs about six weeks of growth before the ground freezes.

Region Aerate + overseed Nematodes for grubs Fall fertilizer Last mow / cleanup
Prairies (Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary) Aug 15 – Sep 15 Aug 15 – Sep 5 Early September Early–mid October
Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa) Aug 20 – Sep 30 Aug 20 – Sep 15 Mid-September + late-fall feed late Oct Late October–November
Quebec (Montreal, Quebec City) Aug 20 – Sep 25 Aug 20 – Sep 10 Mid-September Late October

Notes that save the season

  • Order of operations: aerate, then seed the same day — the cores are free seedbeds. Starter fertilizer with the seed; regular fall feed 4-6 weeks later.
  • Water-restricted regions: reseed with drought-tolerant blends and micro clover instead of fighting the bylaw next July.
  • Grub check first: lift a 30 cm turf flap; 5+ grubs per square foot means nematodes before you invest in seed. Full timing in our beetle & grub guide.
  • Last mow: drop to ~5 cm so snow mould has less to work with; mulch the maple leaves right into the turf.
